- Luxury vinyl (LVP) — genuinely waterproof at the plank level in its rigid-core (SPC/WPC) forms, warmer and quieter underfoot than tile, and the easiest of the hard-surface options here to install as a floating floor. Its main kitchen trade-off is that it cannot be refinished — a worn or gouged plank is replaced, not sanded out — and, like any floating floor, water can still travel through seams and the perimeter to the subfloor even though the plank material itself is unaffected.
- Tile (porcelain/ceramic) — the most water- and stain-proof option outright, and effectively immune to scratches and dents. - Laminate — a hard-wearing, scratch-resistant surface (rated by AC class) at a comparatively modest cost, and available in water-resistant formulations built for kitchens and other wet-adjacent rooms. Its core is still HDF — compressed wood fiber — so even a "waterproof"-labeled laminate deserves a careful read: some are rated waterproof only for a bounded time and depth of standing water, not indefinitely, so check the specific product's rating rather than assuming the word covers every kitchen spill.
- Engineered hardwood — real-wood warmth and refinishability, within the limits of its veneer thickness (see our wear-layer guide), with more dimensional stability than solid wood — which is why it is the wood option most often chosen for kitchens. It is still a wood product at heart: even water-resistant-core versions are not waterproof, and a kitchen is one of the higher-risk rooms in the house for the standing water a wood floor is least equipped to handle.
- Solid hardwood — many kitchens have run on it for decades, and it can be sanded and refinished more times over its life than any other material here, a genuine long-term advantage.
