Laminate is a floor built from a high-resolution printed image of wood or stone, sealed under a hard, clear melamine wear layer often reinforced with aluminum-oxide particles, pressed onto a core of HDF (high-density fibreboard). That construction makes it different from both of its budget rivals: unlike luxury vinyl, which is a plastic product through and through, laminate's core is wood fibre, so it is generally not waterproof; and unlike engineered hardwood, its surface is a photograph rather than a wood veneer, so it cannot be sanded or refinished. What it trades for those limits is real value: laminate is usually the hardest, most scratch-resistant surface among plank floors, and often the least expensive.

What laminate actually is
Every laminate plank is built from the same four layers, bonded together under heat and pressure:
- Wear layer. A clear, hard melamine resin coat — often carrying microscopic aluminum-oxide particles for extra abrasion resistance — bonded over the decorative paper. This is what takes the day-to-day scuffing and what the AC rating below actually measures.
- Decorative (print) layer. A high-resolution photographic paper that creates the wood, stone, or tile look. Better products align an embossed texture to the print (embossed-in-register, EIR) so what you feel underfoot matches what you see.
- HDF core. A dense wood-fibre board, compressed under heat and pressure, that gives the plank its rigidity and its click-lock joint profile. Because it is a wood-fibre product, it swells if it stays wet — this single fact drives most of laminate's water behaviour, covered below.
- Backing / balancing layer. A bottom layer, often melamine-based, that balances the board against warping and adds a first line of defence against moisture from below.
Laminate should not be confused with luxury vinyl, which looks similar on a showroom floor but is a plastic product with no wood content in its core, or with engineered hardwood, which has a layer of real wood on top rather than a printed image.
The AC rating scale — and what NALFA actually certifies
Laminate's signature spec is its AC rating (Abrasion Class), a scale from AC1 to AC5 that comes from the European EN 13329 standard. A weighted, abrasive Taber wheel spins against the wear layer until the printed design shows through; the number of rotations the surface survives sets its class:
- AC1–AC2 — light residential (closets, bedrooms).
- AC3 — most homes.
- AC4 — light commercial and very busy homes.
- AC5 — commercial.
Here is the detail worth knowing before you shop: in North America, NALFA (the North American Laminate Flooring Association) does not grade laminate on the AC scale at all. Its own performance standard, LF-01, tests a broader set of properties — wear, impact, moisture resistance, staining, cleanability, surface bonding, and dimensional stability — and certifies a qualifying product into one of four end-use levels: Residential, Light Commercial, Commercial, or Heavy Commercial. LF-01 certification also requires verified compliance with formaldehyde-emission limits under CARB2 and TSCA Title VI. A product can carry an AC number, a NALFA certification seal, both, or neither — they are two different testing regimes measuring overlapping but not identical things, so check which one (or both) a specific product actually holds rather than assuming they mean the same thing.
Water: resistant vs. waterproof
This is laminate's one real weak point, and it deserves a straight answer. Traditional laminate is not waterproof: its HDF core is wood fibre, and wood fibre swells, delaminates, or discolours if water sits in the seams or under the plank for long enough — even a well-sealed surface will not stop water that travels down through a joint. Newer "water-resistant" and "waterproof" laminate lines exist, using denser or treated cores and tighter locking profiles that shed surface spills far better than standard product. That is genuine progress, but it is a specific manufacturer claim tied to a specific product line, not a property of laminate as a category — read the spec sheet and warranty rather than trusting the word "waterproof" on a sample board. What to look for when buying
- AC rating and/or NALFA certification for the use. Match either scale to real traffic — AC3 or a NALFA Residential certification for most homes, AC4/Light Commercial or higher for very busy households or light commercial spaces — rather than buying the highest number on the shelf.
- Thickness, underlayment, and acoustics. Overall plank thickness (commonly 6–12 mm) affects feel and how well the floor bridges small subfloor imperfections; check whether an underlayment or acoustic pad is included or required, and in multi-family buildings ask for the assembly's IIC and STC figures if the building sets a minimum.
- Edge treatment and realism. A micro-bevel at the plank edges hides minor height differences and reads as more realistic; embossed-in-register (EIR) texture aligns the surface feel with the printed grain.
- Indoor air quality. Confirm the composite core is labelled CARB2 / TSCA Title VI compliant for formaldehyde emissions, and look for a NALFA certification seal, which verifies that compliance independently rather than taking a manufacturer's word for it.
- Warranty caveats. Read what voids the warranty — standing water, missing expansion gaps, and improper subfloor prep are common exclusions, and a "waterproof" claim is only as good as the specific warranty language backing it.
Installation
Laminate is installed as a floating floor: planks snap together with a click-lock joint over an underlayment, without glue or nails, so the whole floor can move slightly as a single sheet with humidity. That movement is exactly why an expansion gap at the walls and any fixed objects is not optional — skip it and the floor has nowhere to expand into, which is a common cause of buckling. A flat, clean subfloor and the underlayment specified by the manufacturer both matter to how the finished floor feels and sounds underfoot.
Pros and cons, honestly
- Pros: a realistic printed look at a wide range of price points; a hard, scratch-resistant surface — generally the most scratch-resistant of the common plank floors; usually the least expensive plank flooring; fast, DIY-friendly floating installation.
- Cons: cannot be refinished — a worn or damaged plank is replaced, not sanded; the HDF core is the weak point around water, so standard laminate does not belong in genuinely wet rooms; can feel harder and colder underfoot than wood or vinyl, and firm, thin installations can sound hollow without a good underlayment.
Where it fits (and doesn't)
Laminate suits dry, moderate-to-high-traffic living areas — living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and bedrooms — where its scratch resistance and price are the priority. A higher AC rating or NALFA Light Commercial-and-up certification extends it into busy family rooms and light commercial settings. It fits less well in bathrooms and other rooms that see standing water, and in basements below grade, unless the specific product is manufacturer-rated water-resistant or waterproof and installed exactly to spec — even then, luxury vinyl or tile remains the safer default for those rooms. Myths & mistakes
- "Laminate is waterproof." Standard laminate is not; its HDF core swells if water reaches it. Only a specific product line manufacturer-rated water-resistant or waterproof changes that, and even then the seams remain the weak point.
- "AC5 is always the better choice for a home." A higher AC number means a harder, more abrasion-resistant surface, not automatically a "better" floor — AC3 fully suits most homes, and paying up for AC5 commercial-grade abrasion resistance in a bedroom buys a spec you will not use.
- "Laminate is just cheap vinyl." They are different materials entirely: laminate is a printed paper layer on a wood-fibre core, while vinyl is a plastic product through and through — the two behave very differently around water and refinishing.
