A budget-friendly, scratch-hard floor built from a photograph, not a piece of wood or plastic — here is exactly what that means, how to read its AC rating, and where its one real weakness lies.

Laminate is a floor built from a high-resolution printed image of wood or stone, sealed under a hard, clear melamine wear layer often reinforced with aluminum-oxide particles, pressed onto a core of HDF (high-density fibreboard). That construction makes it different from both of its budget rivals: unlike luxury vinyl, which is a plastic product through and through, laminate's core is wood fibre, so it is generally not waterproof; and unlike engineered hardwood, its surface is a photograph rather than a wood veneer, so it cannot be sanded or refinished. What it trades for those limits is real value: laminate is usually the hardest, most scratch-resistant surface among plank floors, and often the least expensive.

What laminate actually is

The AC rating scale — and what NALFA actually certifies

Here is the detail worth knowing before you shop: in North America, NALFA (the North American Laminate Flooring Association) does not grade laminate on the AC scale at all. Its own performance standard, LF-01, tests a broader set of properties — wear, impact, moisture resistance, staining, cleanability, surface bonding, and dimensional stability — and certifies a qualifying product into one of four end-use levels: Residential, Light Commercial, Commercial, or Heavy Commercial. LF-01 certification also requires verified compliance with formaldehyde-emission limits under CARB2 and TSCA Title VI. A product can carry an AC number, a NALFA certification seal, both, or neither — they are two different testing regimes measuring overlapping but not identical things, so check which one (or both) a specific product actually holds rather than assuming they mean the same thing.

Water: resistant vs. waterproof

This is laminate's one real weak point, and it deserves a straight answer. Traditional laminate is not waterproof: its HDF core is wood fibre, and wood fibre swells, delaminates, or discolours if water sits in the seams or under the plank for long enough — even a well-sealed surface will not stop water that travels down through a joint. Newer "water-resistant" and "waterproof" laminate lines exist, using denser or treated cores and tighter locking profiles that shed surface spills far better than standard product. That is genuine progress, but it is a specific manufacturer claim tied to a specific product line, not a property of laminate as a category — read the spec sheet and warranty rather than trusting the word "waterproof" on a sample board. What to look for when buying

Installation

Laminate is installed as a floating floor: planks snap together with a click-lock joint over an underlayment, without glue or nails, so the whole floor can move slightly as a single sheet with humidity. That movement is exactly why an expansion gap at the walls and any fixed objects is not optional — skip it and the floor has nowhere to expand into, which is a common cause of buckling. A flat, clean subfloor and the underlayment specified by the manufacturer both matter to how the finished floor feels and sounds underfoot.

Laminate suits dry, moderate-to-high-traffic living areas — living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and bedrooms — where its scratch resistance and price are the priority.
