A wear layer is the clear, protective top layer of a floor — and on most floors it is the single most important durability spec, more telling than overall thickness or price. The catch is that it is measured three different ways: on luxury vinyl it is a clear coat in mils (thousandths of an inch); on engineered hardwood it is the real-wood veneer in millimetres, which sets how many times you can refinish; and on laminate it is a hard melamine coat rated by an AC abrasion class. This guide shows how to read each.

What a wear layer is — and isn’t
The wear layer is the top layer that takes the scratches, scuffs, and traffic so the design or wood beneath stays intact. Think of it as the tread on a tyre: it is the part that wears away, and when it is gone, the floor is finished. That is why it predicts lifespan better than any other single number.
It is not the same as the overall plank thickness (a thick plank can hide a thin wear layer), and it is not the same as the core, which is what gives the floor its rigidity and moisture behaviour. When a salesperson quotes a floor’s “thickness,” ask specifically about the wear layer or veneer — that is the number that ages with you.
Luxury vinyl: measured in mils
On luxury vinyl — including rigid-core SPC and WPC — the wear layer is a clear coat measured in mils, or thousandths of an inch. A mil is not a millimetre (one mil is about 0.025 mm), and confusing the two is the most common vinyl-buying mistake. Typical bands:
- 6 mil — light residential; low-traffic bedrooms and closets, or a rental on a budget.
- 12 mil — the solid all-rounder for a family home; handles kids and pets.
- 20 mil — heavy residential and light commercial; very busy households.
- 28 mil and up — commercial traffic.
A thicker wear layer resists wearing through, but it does not make the floor scratch-proof: texture and the surface finish do most of the scratch-hiding, and a deep gouge can still reach the design layer. Match the mils to the room rather than buying the biggest number.
Engineered wood: the veneer in millimetres
On engineered hardwood, the “wear layer” is the real-wood veneer (also called the lamella) bonded on top, measured in millimetres. Here it does something vinyl’s clear coat cannot: it sets how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished. A rough guide:
- Under 1 mm (for example 0.6 mm) — not refinishable; treat it like laminate, with light maintenance only.
- 2 mm — perhaps one light refinish over its life.
- 3 mm — around one full refinish.
- 4 to 6 mm — several refinishes; approaches solid-wood longevity.
Each proper sand-and-refinish removes a fraction of a millimetre, which is why veneer thickness is the number that decides whether engineered wood is a “renew it” floor or a “replace it” floor. Note that the veneer is not the same as the board’s overall thickness — a thick board can still carry a thin veneer, so ask for the veneer figure specifically.
Laminate: rated, not measured — the AC scale
Laminate’s protective top is a clear melamine layer, but you do not buy it by thickness — you read its abrasion resistance as an AC rating (Abrasion Class), from the European EN 13329 Taber abrasion test:
- AC1–AC2 — light residential (closets, bedrooms).
- AC3 — most homes.
- AC4 — light commercial and very busy homes.
- AC5–AC6 — commercial.
In North America, NALFA also certifies laminate to its own performance standard. Like vinyl, laminate cannot be refinished: when the melamine finally wears through, the printed layer shows, and the floor has reached the end of its life.
Comparing across materials
You cannot convert mils to millimetres to an AC number — they measure different things (the thickness of a clear coat, the thickness of a wood veneer, and the result of an abrasion test). What they share is the job they describe: how much wear a floor can take before the layer that protects its look is gone. Here is the cross-walk:

Common mistakes
- Confusing mils with millimetres. A “20 mil” wear layer is about 0.5 mm, not 20 mm.
- Buying on overall thickness. A thick plank can carry a thin wear layer or veneer; the protective layer is what matters.
- Assuming a thick veneer means refinishable. Only the veneer can be sanded — a thin veneer on a thick board still cannot be refinished.
- Expecting any wear layer to be scratch-proof. It resists wear-through, not deep gouges; a matte or textured finish does the day-to-day scratch-hiding.
Frequently asked questions
Is a thicker wear layer always better?
More wear layer generally means more durability, but match it to the room. You do not need a 20-mil vinyl in a guest bedroom, and no wear layer stops a deep gouge — thickness resists everyday wear-through, not sharp impacts.
What wear layer do I need for a home with a dog?
Aim for a 12 to 20-mil vinyl, an AC3 to AC4 laminate, or a harder wood species. Just as important, choose a textured or matte finish, which hides claw marks and scratches far better than gloss.
Can you refinish luxury vinyl or laminate?
No. Neither can be sanded — a worn plank is replaced, not restored. Only solid wood and engineered wood with a thick enough veneer can be refinished.
How many times can engineered hardwood be refinished?
It depends on the veneer thickness: roughly none under about 1 mm, perhaps once around 2 mm, and several times at 4 to 6 mm. Each proper sand-and-refinish removes a fraction of a millimetre, so the veneer sets the ceiling.
Is 20 mil the same as 20 mm?
No. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch, so 20 mil is about 0.5 mm — not 20 mm. Confusing mils with millimetres is the most common vinyl-buying mistake.
Does a wear layer make a floor waterproof?
No. Water resistance comes from the core and the material, not the wear layer. A vinyl plank is waterproof because of its plastic build; a thick wear layer only protects the surface from wear.
