About Flooring Institute

An independent, vendor-neutral resource that helps people across the US and Canada understand flooring: before they buy it, install it, or recommend it.

Our mission

Flooring Institute is an independent educational resource dedicated to helping consumers and flooring professionals make informed flooring decisions.

Vendor-neutral · Primary-sourced · Not for sale

Why we exist

Most flooring information online is published by someone with a floor to sell. That doesn’t make it wrong, but it does mean the reader is rarely given the whole picture, the honest trade-offs, or a straight answer to “which is actually better for my situation.”

Flooring Institute exists to fill that gap: a place that explains flooring the way a knowledgeable friend in the trade would, plainly, completely, and without steering you toward a purchase. For now the site is offered freely and earns nothing, so we have no reason to bend an answer.

If we ever introduce revenue, it stays walled off from our guidance.

What we cover

Every hard-surface floor a North American household or project is likely to consider, and the concepts that cut across all of them:

Who we serve

Two audiences, on purpose:

We’re a North American resource. That matters because the authorities differ by country: wood-flooring guidance in the United States largely comes from the NWFA, while installation best-practice in Canada is shaped by bodies such as the NFCA. We aim to be accurate on both sides of the border.

Where we draw the line

Our line in the sand

No brand can pay us for a recommendation, a ranking, or a kinder verdict: our guidance is not for sale, and we name no paid “favourite.”

A site like this does cost money to run, so we may one day carry clearly-labelled advertising, sponsorship, or affiliate links; if we do, they stay walled off from what we teach and are disclosed plainly. See our editorial standard for the details.

What we are not

Flooring Institute is an independent educational publisher. We are not affiliated with the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), the National Floor Covering Association (NFCA), the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI), or any manufacturer or retailer.

We are not a certification or standards body, and we do not test, certify, or grade products. Our job is to explain the bodies that do: accurately, and with a link back to the source.

Our standards & how we work

The detail behind everything above lives on three short pages (how we hold every guide to a standard, how we actually research and write, and the limits of what this site can tell you):

  • Editorial Standard: the rules every guide is held to (vendor-neutral, primary-sourced, dated).
  • How We Work: our actual research and writing process, guide by guide.
  • Disclaimer & Terms: what this site is (education) and is not (professional advice).
