Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood: How to Choose

Both are genuine wood — the difference is how they are built, which decides where each can go and how long it lasts.

Engineered and solid hardwood are both real wood, so they look and feel alike underfoot — the difference is construction. Solid hardwood is one thick piece of wood you can sand and refinish for generations, but it moves the most with humidity, so it belongs above grade over a wood subfloor. Engineered hardwood is a real-wood veneer over a cross-layered core that makes it far more dimensionally stable, so it can go over concrete, below grade, and with radiant heat — but it only refinishes as many times as its veneer allows. Choose solid for a forever floor you will refinish repeatedly above grade; choose engineered for stability, concrete or basements, radiant heat, and wide planks.

How they are built

Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of a species such as oak, maple, or walnut — typically 3/4 inch thick, tongue-and-groove, and nailed down over a wood subfloor. Engineered hardwood is layered: a hardwood veneer (the lamella) bonded over a plywood or fibreboard core whose grain runs in alternating directions. That cross-layering is the whole point — it cancels out much of the seasonal expansion and contraction that solid wood goes through.

Stability and where each can go

Because solid wood is 100% wood, it swells in humid seasons and shrinks in dry ones, which is why it needs careful acclimation, humidity control, and an above-grade wood subfloor. It is generally not recommended over concrete or below grade.

Engineered wood’s layered core makes it much more stable, so it tolerates humidity swings and can be installed as a floating floor, glued, or nailed — over plywood or concrete, above or below grade, and often over radiant heat. This flexibility is engineered wood’s biggest practical advantage, and the reason it dominates new installations.

Refinishing and lifespan

Solid wood’s advantage is longevity: with 3/4 inch of wood above the tongue, it can be sanded and refinished many times across decades — even generations — letting you change colour or erase years of wear. Engineered wood can be refinished too, but only within its veneer: roughly not at all under about 1 mm, once near 2 mm, and several times at 4 to 6 mm. A thin-veneer engineered floor is a “replace it,” not a “renew it,” floor — so if refinishing matters to you, check the veneer thickness, which is not the same as the board’s overall thickness.
