Both are rigid-core luxury vinyl: a printed design under a clear wear layer, on a stiff core, usually with an attached pad and a click-lock joint for floating installation. Both are waterproof at the plank level, both install the same way, and both come in the same range of looks. On both, the wear layer (in mils) governs how much traffic they take. The only real difference is what the core is made of.
SPC: stone-plastic composite (the dense core)
SPC’s core blends powdered limestone with PVC and stabilizers, making it very dense and rigid. That has clear consequences:
- Harder and more dimensionally stable, so it copes better with temperature swings — useful in sunrooms and cottages.
- Best at hiding subfloor imperfections (telegraphing) because the rigid core bridges minor bumps.
- Thinner planks for the same strength, thanks to the dense core.
- Firmer and louder underfoot, and a little less warm.
- Slightly better resistance to dents from heavy furniture.
Good for: busy homes, kitchens, basements, less-than-perfect subfloors, and rooms with big temperature swings.
WPC: wood-plastic composite (the comfort core)
WPC’s core is a foamed polymer — despite the name, the “wood” is usually a wood-flour filler, not solid wood. The foam changes the feel:
- Thicker, with a cushioned, softer, warmer step underfoot.
- Quieter — the foam damps sound, which is nicer in bedrooms and upper floors.
- More forgiving to stand on for long stretches.
- Softer core means slightly less resistance to dents under heavy point loads, and a touch less stability in extreme heat.
Good for: bedrooms, living areas, upstairs rooms where sound matters, and comfort-first spaces where the subfloor is already flat.

Which should you choose?
- Choose SPC if the subfloor is uneven, the room is high-traffic or wet, it sees big temperature swings, or you simply want the most durable, stable option.
- Choose WPC if comfort and quiet matter most — bedrooms, upstairs rooms, or spaces where you stand a lot — and the subfloor is already flat.
- For most homes either works well; the look and the wear layer usually matter more than the core.
What matters more than WPC vs SPC
- The wear layer. A 20-mil plank outlasts a 6-mil plank whether it is SPC or WPC — see our wear-layer guide.
- The attached pad. Much of the comfort and sound damping comes from the underlayment, not the core alone.
- Sound rules in condos. Meeting a building’s impact-sound (IIC) minimum depends more on a proper acoustic underlayment than on the core type.
- Subfloor prep. Even a rigid core needs a reasonably flat, clean subfloor.
- Health certifications. Look for CARB2 / TSCA Title VI on the core, FloorScore for low emissions, and phthalate-free vinyl.
- Marketing names. Some products blur the line with terms like “rigid core” or “enhanced”; check the actual core and the wear-layer spec rather than the label.
