What each process actually involves
Prefinished boards are milled, sanded, stained and coated on a factory production line, commonly with a UV-cured finish and often reinforced with aluminum oxide, then cured before the flooring ever leaves the plant. The board that arrives at the house is a finished product; the installer's job is to fit and secure it, not to finish it. That factory process also gives consistent sheen and color from board to board within the same production run.
A site-finished floor is installed first, typically nailed, glued or floated as bare or lightly sealed wood, and only becomes a finished surface afterward. A professional sands the entire installed floor flat as one continuous plane, applies stain if the project calls for it, then builds up a finish, most often polyurethane, in multiple coats with dry time between them.
The line between the two is not always absolute. Some engineered product sold as site-finished still leaves the factory with a very light sealer coat that gets sanded away during the job. What actually decides which category a floor belongs to for the purposes of this guide is where the visible, wearing finish is applied: at the factory, or after the boards are already down.
Why factory finishes can be harder than anything applied on site
Many prefinished floors use a finish reinforced with aluminum-oxide, an additive mixed into the coating specifically to boost scratch and abrasion resistance beyond an unmodified coating. Combined with a UV-cured cure, hardened almost instantly under ultraviolet light on a factory line under tightly controlled conditions, the result is frequently a harder, more abrasion-resistant surface than a typical site-applied coat achieves straight out of the box.

This is a general tendency, not a guarantee that every prefinished product outperforms every site-applied one. A premium, professionally applied site finish can still hold up well, and a factory finish typically carries its own finish warranty, separate from any installation warranty, that generally excludes scratching or damage from improper cleaning. Confirm what a specific warranty covers rather than assuming factory hardness for the floor's life.
Micro-bevels and eased edges: the visible cost of factory finishing

That includes the narrow joints between boards: the coating bridges and seals the top of each joint the same way it seals the open field of a board, producing a flat, unbroken plane with no bevel.

A site finish is a construction event that happens inside an occupied or soon-to-be-occupied home, not a manufacturing step completed elsewhere before delivery. Sanding a floor down to bare wood produces genuine wood dust throughout the room and, to a lesser degree, adjoining spaces. Professional dust-containment equipment reduces this substantially but does not eliminate it, since fine dust travels through door gaps and HVAC returns.

A finish that is still sound but simply due for renewal can also take a scheduled maintenance coat without any screening step at all.

That is a genuine reason to set aside a box or two of the original product at installation.
Neither repair path is inherently worse; they suit different kinds of damage. A scattering of light scuffs across a large area favors a site-finished floor's blendable recoat, while an isolated deep gouge or stain on a single board can be a cleaner fix on a prefinished floor, provided a matching board is actually available.
Refinishing later: the NWFA thresholds and the veneer ceiling apply to both
Whichever finish process is used at installation, the wood underneath sets the real ceiling on how many times a floor can be sanded and refinished later, not the finish. Where hardwood falls in a renovation's schedule is not only a design choice; it interacts directly with which finish process is being used.
