What linoleum actually is
Linoleum is manufactured by oxidizing linseed oil, pressed from flax seed, until it solidifies into a tough, rubbery binder, then blending that binder with ground pine rosin, wood flour, and cork dust as bulking material, plus mineral pigments for color. The compound is calendered under heat and pressure onto a woven jute backing.
That composition is why calling linoleum bio-based is not a marketing flourish. Linseed oil, pine rosin, wood flour, cork dust, and jute are agricultural and forestry materials, not petroleum feedstock. Being bio-based does not exempt linoleum from every manufacturing question, either. Linoleum vs. vinyl: the confusion, and why it matters
The confusion is understandable and long-standing. Both materials are sold as resilient sheet or tile flooring, both feel similar underfoot, and one manufacturer's trademarked linoleum product name is commonly used in casual conversation, and sometimes even by people selling flooring, as if it were the generic word for the material itself. It is not: linoleum is a defined material category, not one company's brand.
The distinction that matters most is where the color lives. This site's glossary defines linoleum as chemically unrelated to vinyl because "its colour runs through the whole material rather than sitting in a printed layer." Because pigment is mixed through the full thickness during manufacture, the color visible at the surface is the same color underneath it.
Vinyl works the opposite way. Linoleum's through-body color does not carry that specific failure mode, though it is not immune to wear generally, covered below.

Because the finish is what actually takes daily abrasion and protects the surface below it, manufacturers commonly specify a periodic re-sealing or refinishing schedule for linoleum, on top of routine damp-mopping and prompt cleanup of spills. Follow the specific product's own care documentation for how often that finish needs attention; treat any general number encountered elsewhere as a starting point, not a guarantee.
This is linoleum's honest cost for its bio-based composition, and it is a real one. A household weighing linoleum against vinyl is, in practice, weighing a different raw-material profile and through-body color against an ongoing maintenance obligation that a factory-sealed vinyl floor generally does not carry once installed. Neither material is simply the better choice; each trades different things for different advantages.

Linoleum's jute backing is a natural fiber, and natural fibers tolerate sustained moisture far worse than the synthetic backings used on most sheet vinyl. Manufacturer installation guidance commonly directs installers to avoid rooms with standing water, and to confirm the specific product's rating before use in a genuinely wet space, rather than assuming any resilient sheet flooring is automatically interchangeable there.
This does not mean linoleum is unusable in a kitchen or a powder room; it means the same discipline applies as with any moisture-sensitive floor. Sheet, tile and click-plank formats
Linoleum is sold in three general formats. Sheet linoleum comes in wide rolls, installed with adhesive as a glue-down floor in one or a few large pieces, which minimizes seams the same way sheet vinyl does, and for the same reason: fewer seams means fewer paths for water and dirt down to the subfloor.
Tile linoleum is cut into individual squares or rectangles, glued down piece by piece. A newer, manufactured option bonds a linoleum wear surface to a rigid or semi-rigid core built for click-lock joints, so the floor installs as a floating floor rather than being glued down. Linoleum is commonly described in manufacturer literature as one of the longer-lived categories of resilient flooring when its finish is properly maintained. Treat any specific lifespan figure encountered as coming from a manufacturer's own product specification and warranty terms, tied to that product's finish, traffic, and maintenance schedule, rather than as an independently measured fact this guide can state as universal.
Because color runs through the material rather than sitting in a printed layer, ordinary surface wear on linoleum tends to be less visually dramatic than the same wear on a printed vinyl product, where wear-through exposes a different-looking layer underneath. That does not mean linoleum cannot be gouged, torn, or scorched; physical damage still needs the format-specific repair described above.
